My Statement
“Democracy in NOT a spectator sport” is printed on our Deschutes Democrats' T-shirts. For many, it is just a slogan. For Barack Obama, it is how he will govern as President of the United States. His ability to inspire and energize millions to get involved is breathtaking. And the best is yet to come.

For me, sitting on the sidelines as never been an option. I organized and marched for civil rights in Biloxi in the '60’s; demonstrated against the Vietnam War in the early '70’s; fought for Affirmative Action and Title IX in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s; lobbied for reproductive choice, GLBT rights and social justice for decades; and championed the rights of organized labor for most of my adult life.

In the political arena, I have worked non-stop since 2002 organizing and leading the Democratic Party at the county, district, and state levels. Our collective efforts are really paying off. In April, House District 54 (Bend) became the first district east of the mountains to turn blue! And the City of Redmond is not far behind. In the primary, Deschutes County voted for Obama 60% to 39% -- the third highest margin in the state!

As one of the fastest-growing, blue-turning counties in Oregon, I believe that Deschutes County has earned a place on the delegation to Denver.

I would be honored to represent Central Oregon in nominating Senator Barack Obama as our next President and humbly ask for your vote.

Thank you!
Pat Ackley
